| • Heart support – aerobic exercise will increase the flow of blood to the heart, increasing the amount of blood per heart beat. This should result in a reduction of the heart rate when a person is relaxing and while exercising. All being well, the heart becomes stronger as it manages the flow of blood more efficiently. • Weight control – the body is meant to move in order to burn the fat it has consumed during the day. The body will burn more fat while exercising which will reduce the total amount of body fat. • Boost immune system – a body that is working efficiently will be able to fight off colds and other viral infections. Exercise works along with a healthy diet to build an efficient immune system. • Reduces illnesses – in conjunction with a stronger immune system, aerobic exercise will help prevent more serious illnesses such as heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and even diabetes. Many of these illnesses are associated with a person’s weight, and aerobic exercise will help the person reduce the amount of fat in the body as well as strengthening the heart and improving cell generation and blood flow. • Muscle strengthening – strong muscles are required to support the total body, from the shoulders that help with lifting and carrying, to the mid-section core that supports the entire body, to the leg muscles that help the body move. Aerobic exercise helps increase the blood supply to the muscles and reduce harmful lactic acid build-up that can cause muscle pain and soreness. • Improves endurance and flexibility – strong muscles increase the body’s strength and endurance levels. When a body is more flexible it is less prone to falls and injury. • Improves mental health – when a person exercises it increases the release of endorphins which is the body’s natural painkillers. Endorphins also reduce anxiety and stress and can improve depression. • Reduces high blood pressure – exercise can lower the systolic and diastolic rate in the blood pressures for people who may have hypertension. • Improves cholesterol – regular exercise will result in an increase of the good HDL cholesterol levels and reduce LDL levels. • Improves posture – along with a body becoming more flexible through aerobic exercise, it also improves the body’s posture as muscles become toned and better able to support the body’s weight. These ten benefits of aerobic exercise provide good, healthy reasons to start getting the body moving on a daily basis. It can be as simple as taking a brisk walk around the block.
